Depression and anxiety are some of the most common and uncomfortable emotions people experience at some point in life. When depression, anxiety, or both become unmanageable, psychotherapy can be beneficial. Psychotherapy helps patients change previous maladaptive thinking styles, reduce avoidance behaviors, and learn new coping techniques. Depression and anxiety can improve over time, and patients learn to manage their own distress. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective treatment for both depression and anxiety.
Many individuals can suffer from specific symptoms associated with experiencing painful and traumatic experiences. Anxiety, fear, hopelessness, anger, and shame are a few common reactions lingering long after the traumatic event(s). Trauma symptoms can create avoidance of everyday life situations, which may lead to isolation and significantly decreased functioning. Treatment can help patients overcome symptoms and reclaim their life from a traumatic experience. Prolonged Exposure (PE) is a highly effective treatment for PTSD.
Patients struggling with chronic and pervasive difficulties leading to unhealthy, unstable patterns of thinking, functioning, and behaving may be suffering from personality disorders. Patients with personality disorders tend to have trouble perceiving and relating to situations and people, which creates considerable problems and limitations for them in interpersonal relationships, work, school, and/or social activities. Treatment for personality disorders can be helpful in addressing the four general areas of dysfunction: cognition (perceiving/thinking), affectivity (mood), interpersonal functioning, and impulse control. Patients suffering from personality issues can benefit from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills.
